Atypical Life Foundation
A letter from our founders
Dear Neurodivergent individuals, Parents, and Caregivers,
We’re so glad you’ve found the Atypical Life Foundation website. Like many others, our story is unique, but the diagnosis and challenges we’ve faced are all-too-familiar for families of neurodivergent children.
When we received our son’s Autism diagnosis, we felt lost. However we found our way with the help of others who were committed to addressing the root cause of symptoms, rather than taking the typical approach of simply masking symptoms with pharmaceuticals – a path that can often lead to worsening outcomes.
We know how hard it was to find reliable holistic resources. That’s why we’ve created Atypical Life Foundation— to be a centralized resource to help families of children who are neurodivergent or autistic. As a family, we have tried many holistic ways of healing our son. Starting with diet, CBD, stem cell treatment, detoxes, and other supplements.
It’s our mission to encourage and give hope to parents and caregivers by providing support, information, and resources about Neurodiversity. Through lifestyle changes and the introduction of CBD products, we hope you and your family find success on your journey to living a happy and balanced life.
There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to Autism or human health in general, but we hope that by sharing our stories and experiences, we can help others find their way to put the puzzle pieces of their family’s wellness together.
Keep learning. Keep advocating. Keep fighting… Just keep swimming.
Sincerely,
James and His Loving Parents

Our Story

Starting our family

Baby James was born
When our baby, James, was born, he was happy, healthy and full of energy. He hit all his milestones, rarely got sick, and responded to us when we called his name. Thriving as a family and filled with joy, we cherished every typical baby moment with him.
Followed “the Schedule”
James attended his regularly scheduled pediatric check-ups, and his doctors consistently reported that he was a healthy, typically developing baby. Following their guidance, we adhered to the standard vaccination schedule for his age. After one of the visits, James became ill, causing us to miss his next appointment. Once he recovered, we resumed the schedule, but this time he received a double dose of vaccines to catch up as recommended.

Things start to change
Following the visit, we began to notice significant changes in James. He stopped smiling, no longer made eye contact, and wasn’t responding to his name. Initially, we were in denial, hoping these behavioral shifts were temporary and not indicative of a deeper underlying issue. When family members visited, they also observed these differences. Some suggested it might be a phase, while others urged us to investigate further.
We Started to Seek Help
James had initially been meeting his developmental milestones, but with these changes, we observed that he was falling behind in his speech development. At age three, we enrolled him in speech therapy, hoping he would catch up and that this delay might simply be part of his individual growth pattern. However, from age three to four, we saw no progress despite consistent therapy sessions. It became clear to us that this was not a phase but something more significant.
A Diagnosis
The school’s child psychologist conducted an evaluation of James’ progress and met with our family to discuss the findings. It was during this process that James was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As new parents who were still learning to navigate parenthood, the diagnosis left us feeling overwhelmed and uncertain. We had little knowledge of ASD and were unsure on how to move forward. Our immediate concern was understanding the next steps to ensure James could lead a happy, healthy, and thriving life.
Finding Supportive Resources
The school psychologist recommended that we consult a homeopathic BioMed doctor for James. A BioMed doctor is a physician-scientist with expertise in both biomedical research and pathology—the study of the root causes of disease and illness. This particular doctor specialized in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and, as a parent of a child on the autism spectrum, brought both professional knowledge and personal experience to his practice.
A Fork in the Road
Conventional autism management often relies on pharmaceuticals. Many children on the autism spectrum experience seizures, stimming, or other physical and mental health challenges that may necessitate medication, which some doctors consider essential. However, for James’ symptoms, the doctor suggested alternatives: dietary changes, a vitamin regimen, a consistent routine, and potentially the use of CBD.
What is CBD and is it safe for our Son?
When we first heard about CBD, we knew little about it, though we had often seen it mentioned alongside THC in discussions about cannabis. Growing up during the D.A.R.E. era, we were taught to view cannabis solely as a recreational drug, never considering its medicinal potential. After consulting with our doctor, however, we started to see CBD as a promising option for James.
We chose the path of education and action
While exploring autism symptoms and CBD’s potential benefits, we uncovered three key insights:
- Children with autism often experience significant inflammation in the brain and gut.
- Certain foods, such as gluten, dairy, and sugar, are known to contribute to inflammation.
- Research on CBD has demonstrated its ability to reduce inflammation within the body
With this knowledge, we decided to implement changes to determine if reducing inflammation could alleviate the symptoms James was experiencing.
A New Chapter Begins
We quickly adopted a new lifestyle for James, adding vitamins and reducing inflammatory foods but delaying CBD use. Initially, we saw progress—he made eye contact when called—though he still struggled to speak. When his supplements ran out, he regressed dramatically, showing pain through tantrums, head-banging, and screaming. After restocking his supplements and seeing improvement, we decided to try CBD as well.

Introducing CBD into our Journey
Initially hesitant due to the stigma around cannabis-derived products, we were compelled to explore CBD after seeing our son’s distress. We consulted with Hemp Works to understand dosing and started giving him a few CBD drops daily with dark chocolate. Within a week, we saw significant improvements. While results vary and there are no guarantees, CBD proved beneficial for us.

A New Version of James
To our amazement, James began sitting calmly through meals, focusing better, and communicating—answering questions and making requests. Within five weeks, he moved from echoing words to meaningful responses. His tantrums decreased, discomfort eased, and focus improved dramatically. After fearing we’d never hear him say ‘mom’ or ‘dad,’ these changes felt miraculous—like reclaiming a part of our child we thought was lost.
Atypical Life Foundation is born
Our journey has been marked by numerous challenges and triumphs over the years, each of which has taught us invaluable lessons and contributed to the progress we’ve achieved. Today, we are eager to share our story with other families, hoping it may inspire success and positive change through similar lifestyle adjustments. We invite you to join us as we navigate this path together, celebrating the unique and beautiful personalities of different brains along the way.

Why We Chose CBD for Austism
There is a LOT of science behind how our bodies interact with cannabinoids like CBD. Let’s start simple and break down the biggest piece of the puzzle — why and how CBD interacts with our bodies.
- Our bodies have a system called the endocannabinoid system, or ECS for short.
- Our ECS has receptors — like a lock waiting for a key.
- Cannabinoids (like CBD) are like little keys that fit into those receptors.
- Children or adults with autism frequently suffer from a range of physical and mental health conditions.
- There are ongoing studies to discover how CBD may interact with the physical and mental health of those with autism.

There are many reasons why scientists think CBD helps people. The FDA limits what we’re allowed to say about CBD and why it works. Check out these studies to learn more.
Cannabinoids in CBD connect with CB1 and CB2 receptors throughout the endocannabinoid system. The ECS provides support for main functions and processes within the body.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is described as a “developmental disorder” because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life.
The repetition, mimicking, or imitation of sounds, phrases, or words. This is a common behavior for those with ASD.
Stimming — or self-stimulatory behavior — is repetitive, unusual, or seemingly uncontrollable body movement or noises. Stimming might include clapping, rocking back and forth, kicking, or jumping.
Hyperactivity means a person may seem to move about constantly or sometimes uncontrollably, excessively fidgeting, tapping, or talking.
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations and sometimes loss of consciousness or awareness.
